MEHAYO is a Tanzanian non-government organisation established with the aim of helping Mentally Handicapped Youth in Morogoro.
Its goal is to improve the quality of life for mentally handicapped young people, while at the same time creating better awareness of mental disability among their parents and the local population.
Practical life skills, education and vocational training are the main objectives of the training programme. Attention is also given to recreation, sport and social integration.
The organisation has 2 centres and provides shelter for 41 mentally handicapped people, ranging in age from 6 to 31 years. Some youngsters and children stay in the MEHAYO hostel, but most of them live at home.
The staff at MEHAYO are enthusiastic and dedicated people, both local and International and most of them are volunteers. Although not all are trained in the field of mental disability, their aim is to support MEHAYO by contributing their knowledge, skills, time and energy.
MEHAYO is a non-profit making organisation. It generates income by selling crops and home-made products. Other sources of finance are donations from friends and benefactors and occasional funding provided by international charity foundations.
